If you have just received an XR, the best approach is simple: connect the original charger and let the board reach a full charge before going for your first proper ride.
Should you charge the Onewheel XR before riding?
Yes. Even if the board has enough charge to turn on and ride, I recommend charging it fully first. This is also the recommendation from Future Motion Inc.
The XR manual recommends fully charging the board and notes that range depends on several factors, including rider weight, riding style, terrain, hills and tire pressure.
There is also a safety reason not to deliberately run the battery very low. The XR has low-battery pushback, which is an indication that the battery is too low to continue riding normally. This should not be ignored.
If you are new to Onewheel, read the manual before your first ride and make sure you understand pushback and the other warnings.
What if you bought a used Onewheel XR?
A used XR can have a battery that has been through several years of charging cycles, or one that has spent a long time in storage. The fact that the board powers on does not tell you everything about the condition of the battery.
If you bought a used XR, check the battery condition and the board’s history before relying on it for long rides.

How should I store the Onewheel XR?
For long-term storage, Future Motion recommends keeping the battery between 30% and 50% charge and checking it periodically.
This is different from preparing the board for a ride. If you are going to ride the XR, charge it fully first. If you are putting it away for an extended period, do not leave the battery at 100% as this will degrade the batter cells over time.
